For Discrete Interval Samples, ESN employs piston samplers ranging from 1" to 2" outer diameter and 2' to 4'
in length. The piston sampler enters the hole with a unique sealed piston drive point locked in place. This
prevents the soil from entering the tube while it is driven (Figure A) to the top of the desired sample interval.
The pin is then released from the surface (Figure B) with an extension rod, releasing the drive point. The
sampler is driven another 24" into the soil (Figure C) to collect a discrete 1" diameter core sample (Figure D)
without uphole cave-ins. The core is recovered in a clear polybutyrate liner. (Other liners such as Teflon® or
stainless steel are available with notice.)
